One sentence synopsis: New York is once again flooded with ghosts, because reasons.
One sentence trailer thoughts: not impressed, but I think I'm in love...
Expanded thoughts: I haven't seen a movie get this much pre release hate since Fant4stic last year. This trailer has reinforced the hate as far as many people are concerned. Personally, while I think the switch to an all female cast is unnecessary, it doesn't bother me at all; what matters to me is that the movie's fun. I didn't have much expectations with this reboot to begin with, and frankly the trailer didn't excite me at all, but I can't understand the severe hate it's getting.
The trailer begins with a mention of the original Ghostbusters, which is... confusing. Is this supposed to be a sequel, then, or was that some sort of homage? The rest of the trailer paints the movie as a complete reboot, but that beginning coupled with the reported cameos of Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson certainly lends some credibility to a sequel of sorts theory.

Three of the four look here like they were dragged in into making this movie. The other one's loving every second of it. Can you guess who? |
Either way, I didn't like the editing of the trailer. It was just meh. The first gag was stupid (basically a rehash of the library scene in the original one, but BIGGER, because BIGGER is BETTER), but the ghost looked cool, in a cartoony sort of way. Most of the jokes were uninspired. Kirsten Wiig's character couldn't be duller. Melissa McCarthy's character is a cardboard copy of her most hated roles (NOTE: I have only seen two movies of McCarthy's, and I liked her in both: St. Vincent with Bill Murray, and Spy; but I am aware of the hate she gets for most of her roles and why). Leslie Jones couldn't be any more token black woman in this if she tried, almost offensively so on repeated viewings. Kate McKinnon, though...
I think I'm in love with Kate McKinnon.

I have actually liked her look since the first pics from the set hit the web, but now that we have a personality to couple with the visuals, she is everything I hoped for: weird as fuck, and loving it. Her look reminds me of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon design for Egon Spengler, with some mad scientist sprinkled in. She's the one thing I loved about the trailer, mostly because she seemed to be the only one truly enjoying her time in it (seriously, watch her in every scene, she's into it) and the one gag I chuckled at involved her startling Wiig's character with a wig and a hat (it sounds much worse than it really was). In fact, I will go as far as saying that the one reason I have for watching this movie in theaters is her. I really couldn't care less about the rest of the cast.

We get it, the movie will be in colorful 3D. |
Expectations: low, except for McKinnon's Holtzmann.
